Steps to take when painting cabinetry

  1. Remove all hardware. This includes hinges, knobs, pulls, and drawer pulls.
  2. Clean the cabinets thoroughly. Use a degreaser if necessary to remove grease, grime, and any other dirt or debris.
  3. Sand the cabinets lightly. This will help the paint adhere to the surface. We use 120-grit sandpaper for most cabinets, and 180-grit sandpaper for cabinets that are in good condition. We will fill in any holes, cracks, or dents with wood filler and sand smooth once dry.
  4. Before Priming the cabinets, the painting professional will use painters’ tape to protect walls, countertops, appliances, and other surrounding areas from paint splatters. Priming is a crucial step to making sure the cabinets come out smooth. The primer helps seal the wood, to prevent any issues of stain seeping through. We apply a thin coat of primer to the cabinets and allow the primer to dry completely before applying the next coat. If you are painting a dark cabinet, you may need to prime with a white primer first.
  5. Before Painting the cabinets choose a high-quality cabinet paint that is durable, washable, and resistant to moisture and mildew. Consider the desired level of sheen. Gloss and satin finishes are more durable and easier to clean, while matte finishes have a softer look but are less stain resistant. We apply two or three thin coats of paint to the cabinets.
  6. After the paint has completely dried, we will check for any touch-ups before we reinstall the hardware.
  7. Be sure to check with the contractor on cleaning processes as certain chemicals may be to abrasive for the paint, which can cause immediate peeling.
